This is something I was discussing with my girl gang yesterday. We were all talking about the one piece of advice we would give each other.
The only advice I gave—and most of them did too—was: "Start your retirement funds." Though we’re all decades away from retirement, it feels so distant now. But the earlier you start, the more your money compounds.
When I was studying, I volunteered for women’s NGOs. There, I saw firsthand women coming for help. Most of them had no money. So many came from families with wealth, yet the easiest thing for this world to do is discard an old woman with no safety net—which is money. Husbands die. Children leave. These women are left to fend for themselves.
I don’t wish this for anyone. May you always thrive. Even if you don’t earn, I urge every woman to start saving early and let that money compound through investments.
My father was a lawyer. I’ve seen the darker side of life, where people disown their own family members when they come home to file a case. Life can be very dark sometimes.
I urge you again: start your retirement funds. And don’t tell anyone. To all the young girls who are in love and in that zone where everything feels rosy, I implore you to learn to handle finances. May you girls live like queens. But sometimes kingdoms fall.
The younger you build a fund, the easier it is to compound money. That’s how compound interest works. I beg you, sisters, learn about it from YouTube. I’m telling you, through work and other experiences, I’ve seen the dark side. This world does strange things to poor women, and I pray none of us have to be victims.
As you age, your retirement funds will give you the dignity to live. That’s the only purpose of money—to provide you with that dignity.
If my work has made an impact on you, you can buy me a coffee here. This will help me to keep writing and healing more. Thank you.
